R/C Toys for VJ use

R/C or Remote Control toys have always been a fun thing to play with, but have you you ever wondered about possibility to put them into a specific VJ use? Most toys have gone much further from the days when you had a simple remote toy car that went forward and backwards. Now such RC toys have come a long way with toys that can be played with on land, sea and air.

From RC Helicopters that employ gyros and have 6 axis of movement, to RC cars that can be “upgraded” piece by piece just like a real car, to RC boats that are exact scale models of their real life counterparts. Add a simply spy cam to one of these and you have a mobile visual unit for your next show. I could recommend XenonProject.com website for such items, these guys are toy and hobby company dedicated to delivering a wide range of quality remote control products to both beginners and experts alike and have really good prices. eg. RC Helicopeters from $30 and upwards… Worth Checking it out.

DIY Project: All Weather Projector Protection with Fans to Keep the Box Cool

Do it Yourself Project #1: All weather protection box for Projector with cooling fans.

Wheneer you do end up setting up Projectors at the outdoor events, it become obvious to make sure and keep your sensitive quipment such as projectors in cool, dry and water proof environment. My good friend VJ BlueMD from Melbourne has put together a simple DIY project to manage such a thing.

What you’ll need (For each Projector):

  • Plastic Box container -32 Litre (Approx $10) Every projector varies, so make sure to check that the size of plastic box will be sufficient for what you after.
  • Portrait Frame with Glass (Approx $12)
  • Gaffa tape (Fresh roll – Approx $20)
  • Sharp Knife
  • Power Board (Approx $12)
  • 2 Cooling Fans (Approx $18 each) eg. eziAIR 120MM COMPUTER FAN 220V 21W from ebay
  • 2 Elastic Straps ( Approx $2.50 each)

The Process is pretty straight forward:

  1. Place your projector inside the plastic box and outline the area which will be used for Photo Frame. make sure that the lens can be visible through that area.
  2. Cut out the area with the sharp knife.
  3. Place the Photo frame and Glass and Secure with Gaffa tape. Go gaffa tape, go!
  4. Add Power board and secure it with gaffa tape.
  5. Outline area for Cooling Fans, insert them and secure with gaffa tape. Additional idea is to place small amout of mosquitto netting outside to protect from dust.
  6. Place your projector in and test it out.

p.s Gaffa tape is so awesome, it can be used for pretty much anything!

Voila… Its done! I’ll add few more notes and final conclusions as the project gets tested in the real world. Hint: Rainbow Serpent Festival – Sunset Stage – Big Red Bus (21st-24th January – Beaufort Victoria Australia. See you guys there, and enjoy!

Korg does it again! Nano Controllers Series 2

Korg NanoPad2, nanoPAD2, nanoKONTROL2 - Click to Enlarge
Very exciting news for any travelling VJs and performing artists.. As most would know, Korg Nano series has proven itself a very popular choice among many VJs and performing artists for its light weight, portablity, USB powered design and being super travel friendly. The news just came out that Korg has just launched its second series of Nano controllers with a number of improvements.

Among new features, you will find:

* nanoKEY2: A new keybed, “modeled after a MacBook.” So, it is still going to feel like a computer keyboard (a necessary evil given how thin it is), but at least it’ll feel like a better keyboard.
* nanoKEY2: Light-up octave shift.
* nanoPAD2: Record gestures on the X-Y pad.
* nanoPAD2: 16 pads instead of 12.
* nanoPAD2: Arpeggiator, chord triggers.
* nanoKONTROL2: 8 faders instead of 9, and a more logical control layout.
* nanoKONTROL2: Mackie HUI support.

For more details on the release, please visit : nanoSERIES2- Slim-line USB-MIDI Controllers
