Excitement levels for Winter Solstice 2010 are rising to the boiling point, so to top that up allow me to announce updated list of live visualists and vj artists that you going to see performing night time visuals at Solstice, Freeform, Chill and Market stages. Once again, its our biggest VJ team this year with very interesting and experienced practitioners in the field. We aim to complete your Aural and Visual experience with some fresh and exciting visual content.

* in Alphabetical order

VJ Asterix (Darwin)
http://www.imagineer.net.au/australian_vj/
http://www.vimeo.com/vjasterix

Asterix works with an array of real time audio visualisers pre-rendered eye candy to take you on a magical visual journey. For VJ `Asterix; Sine, Cosine and audio are essential ingredients in modular realtime visual software he uses for creating mesmerizing kaleidoscopes, audio driven 3d worlds and realtime video mixing. VJing is the ultimate escape from his life in commercial graphics, and an opportunity for boundless creativity ‘live’ and in the moment. With music as his guide he takes you on a journey into his world of fantasy and spirituality.

VJ Blindoff (France)
http://www.myspace.com/blindoff

Formerly in charge of mission in ecology, specialising in Insects, Blindoff is from the alternative art scene of Lille (France). Blindoff has performed Belgium in France, Germany and Spain and in various Major Electronic festivals (AVIT Visual Berlin, Dour festival, Electromind, VAD Gérone, Tilt festival), playing alongside world renowned Dj’s and international live acts such as Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Popof, Phill Kearan, Boy Noizes, MAD PROFFESSOR, Zion train, KRS one…And many more mostly from the electonic minimal style. Blindoff multiplies artistic experiments & visual imaging during his performance & he will remix live visuals whilst integrating his masked character.

Crystalotustar (Kuranda/Cairns)
http://www.crystalotuscreations.com

Crystalotustar is the creative expression of spirit coming through the mind, body and soul of FNQ local Bonny Cooper. Based in the tropical paradise of Kuranda she is inspired to reflect the magnificence of mother earth and creator spirit. Using organic imagery of the earth, inputting sound through the ears, blending it with the fingers and taking it on a journey through technological circuits to be absorbed by the eyes… an organic spiritual psychedelic journey…

VJ Juladi (Germany)
http://www.youtube.com/user/VJjuladi
http://www.myspace.com/juladi

Visions, emotions, optical impressions VJ Juladi creates new pictures and makes sounds visible. Before every projection begins the search for out of the ordinary pictures, a unexplored perspective, a hidden treasure. With every performance, the video artist gets into the atmosphere, the visual lights, music and audience with her mix of local pictures, movements, artistic talent… as well as available optical snippets. The senses are invited to journey through the beautiful composition of picture and sound. VJ Juladi studied at the Stuttgart Media University. The media design and electroacoustics composition courses at the Bauhaus University in Weimar developed her feeling for music and pictures. In 2004, she broadcasted a weekly live programme with two friends which was devoted to psytrance and which was broadcasted in the Stuttgart area through UKW and worldwide over the internet. VJ Juladi is Elke from Nuertingen near Stuttgart (Germany), who likes to present pictures, but also doesn’t want to show too much. A good example are the clouds in the sky. Everyone discovers something different and every observer has their own imagination of the pictures.

Matty Moon (Perth)
http://www.myspace.com/matty_moon

Matty’s second VJ performance @ Winter Solstice. And you can also catch him playing DJ set as well at this years event.

Morph (Sydney)
http://www.morphvisual.com/

MoRpH (aka Grant Muir) has been a predominant figure on the Australian (and international) VJ scene for over 10 years. His visuals never fail too prove innovative and creative with his blending of old and new technologies, stunning graphics and amazing live footage. His unique performance video style has seen him working with a HUGE list of international Djs of all genres (Luke Slater, Eric Morillo, Carl Cox, LTJ Bukem, DJ craze, Sasha & Digweed and many, many more) and at festivals all over Australia & the world. Unlike other VJs, MoRpH has an energetic stage presence that is reflected in his mixing, blending performance with creation in a flurry of motion.

Phosphorus (Cairns/ Townsville)
http://www.myspace.com/phosphorusvj

Phosphorus has been creating and manipulating live digital visuals for events in FNQ for over 8years. Born and bread in the rainforests of Kuranda, where which his style and subject matter which have been inspired from. Expect a hypnotic convergence of nature and technology, a journey into the self and to the divine cosmos. As above and so below.

Plankton (Cairns)
http://www.myspace.com/sid_pixel
sid has always been fascinated by visuals, and has adapted his digital art skills to create animated loops using photographs, 3d models and anything that pops into his mind. Based on a tropical island off cairns, he is
totally surrounded by the elements, and this will reflect through his visual creations.

Tim Parish (verb) (Melbourne)
http://undergrowth.org/user/verb
** will be VJing with Editor (Melbourne) and AV set @ CHILL on Sunday

Tim Parish is the art director and co-editor of Undergrowth.org, which he founded with Rak Razam in 2004. He is a cross media artist, working in video art, painting, illustration, writing, and graphic design. His films have been screened in festivals around the planet, as well as widely distributed freely through Indymedia channels and the internet. He regularly exhibits his paintings and prints his writing through the Undergrowth books and magazines, and has a regular blog on Nomadology, a collective portal for gypsy tales and literary ruminations on the nature of travel. He has also worked as a film curator for many festivals and conferences. He is writing about himself in the third person right now, and it feels really wierd. In his own words:

I like to play with words, colours, molecules, and pixels.

vdmo Kstati (Cairns)
Seems to be Right Now
http://www.vdmokstati.com

Likes long walks on the beach, creating visuals, coordinating video elements for outdoor and indoor events & festivals ( Winter Sosltice, Earth Freq, etc). Local to North Queensland (Cairns) and regular on a scene throughout FNQ, Central and SE QLD, NWS, Sydney, Victoria and Melbourne. Likes to stay in a moment.

Mother has reached a new milestone today (0.5) by expanding to OSX and adding processing update to version 1.0.7. Through discussion with Illias previously I have made a suggestion of trying to keep processing libraries in separate folders from Mother.jar that’s so if processing.org makes an update, Mother update could be simply implemented through overwriting some folders. Im very happy that this feature is now implemented and functioning. Thanks Illias!

To Download Mother version 0.5.0, visit from Google code repository and grab your preferred version (PC/OSX).

From the colour organs of past centuries, to todays VJing and new media art performances, artists and scientists have shown perpetual interest in the live performance of visual imagery.

The limited aesthetic flexibility permitted by existing tools however has meant that artists striving to differentiate their work have most often been the inventors and creators of the tools they use.

To address this obstacle, we have developed a set of tools, that make use of and extend the popular Processing open-source multimedia programming environment.

Together they will enable artists without the skills of computer programming to significantly influence the content of their visual performance, while also keeping the programming of new graphics algorithms accessible to those seeking greater creative freedom.

Installation

Unzip “Mother 0.5 for Processing 1.0.7 – Windows.zip” or “Mother 0.5 for Processing 1.0.7 – OSX.zip” archive, depending on your platform.

In the folder “Foetus library” you will find Foetus.zip; extract this and put the extracted Foetus folder into the libraries folder of your processing sketches. Reference and examples are included in the Foetus folder.

For instructions on using Mother, read included “GETTING STARTED.TXT” file.

Tested

Platforms Windows, OSX

Introduction of video capturing technology through very light and compact iNano which may interest some video artists for size and portability. Quickly looking through the Technical Specs on the unit I find that it can capture H.264 VGA video at 640 by 480 pixels with up to 30 frames per second with AAC audio. Not bad, especially for the size.

If you prefer to capture some footage with effects, you can, and they include: Sepia, Black and White(Contrast the adjustment layers in Quicktime Pro and use Clips as Masks), X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch and Twirl. Ha! Imagine running around the party few hours before your set collecting dozens of Tunnel vision clips onto that little 8 or 16 GB hard drive. Be honest, those can come in handy. Of course some might argue that PAL or high definition is the way to go for everything these days, but still,- special moments that captured at fairly decent size can add that little extra to the show.

You can check the quality of the clips on the iNano Video Page.

I’ll be ordering one shortly.

From very brief observation it looks like an awesome VJ related and Art portal which will only grow and already has a great potential. Its also nice to read about VJ scene in Russia which I have so much interest about. Worth a look if you can read and understand Russian VJRussia.ru but don’t despair, with having extra help from Google Translation Service, website can be translated to english to understandable English VJRussia.com/en/

Over last week-end I had the pleasure to perform visuals as part of Illumination (Cairns) – White Party which was brought by Silver Gem and it had its 10th Anniversary since the inception in 1999. The event is a brain child of Deano & Venus who had put a lot of effort and vision to make and keep making this event reality year after year. I want to thank them dearly for they efforts.

This was my first time to perform at this show, even though I nearly made into the line up for the last year, this was the time. The event itself attracts somewhat diffrent audience to what you’d normally see at outdoor bush events in North Queensland which was a nice change as it brings new crowd to electronic music and arts for people to enjoy.

I was booked to do live vj’ing work on main stage along side Blakey (vj Phrosporous) and a string of local and nation talent with amazing sound, light and lazer rigs to boot.

The line up was as follows;

Beatroot- local Cairns outfit who primarily shape they music around percussion and drums,- very lovely.

Gathuarn Gabun – Local artist, good flow of the set.

Monkey – Nice deep house into progressive set

Funkform – Local producer and Artist performing lively set full of amazing soundscapes. Among my personal favorite on the night. Was very happy with my visuals over his music.

Modify – Sydney based artist who was amazing in my opinion. Pure Live set with integration of didgeridoo and awesome production to boot. Tops!

Endorphin – For his set we took time off as Endorphin was playing Audio and Visuals by himself. His show also consisted of Dancer (video will follow up shortly) and overall it was really good. Perhaps the only concern to an overall performance as that his show hasn’t really evolved in the last 7 years that I had seen him prior. Never the less its still very inspirational and I’m happy to see it again.

Suspect - Solid set as always from local Jesse Kuch of Open Records. Absolute pleasure to lay down visuals over his material.

Duncan – Once again, another personal favourite. I have worked with those guys before, so its niot a surprise that its very natural to play with them again and again.

Daisuke - One of the headliners for the night, his sound taken people on a accelerating journey and the set was very well structured and flowd well.

Jarramundi – Lively classic Jarrad set. Top job on production and flow. Some parts I felt went over people’s heads, yet was really good set never the less.

Shaka – Finished up the night on main stage to solid up for it audience who stayed up till the end. Top night all around.

On the technical Side:

On the night we were using Edirol v-440 – video mixer which neither me or Blakey used before, yet this is such a solid piece of equipment that possibilities of incorporating High Definition Inputs is simply a breeze. Only had very limited number of effects as to what you’d get with Edirol v4, yet its was fairly managable.

Personally I used laptop and computer as my 2 sources – Primarily running combos of Resolume, Resolume Avenue, Open TZT and vvvv that I swapped and changed through the night.

Blake had 2 laptops: pc and mac which had Visual Jockey, Arkaos Grand VJ and Resolume Avenue through the night.

The event was tops overall with only few minor technical glitches and great responce from those that attended the event. Videos and Photos are coming shortly.
