If you having issues installing PD-extended with GEM on Ubuntu 9.10, please stop wasting your time by trying to get sourceforge deb files to run. Those will only keep you running in circles by requesting dependency files as I had to find out and wont get you anywhere in a hurry. Just jump directly to Latest Build Repository and grab the latest build from there! Best tip ever!!! http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/latest/
Free Tools for VJs??
Art of VJing is multi-faceted technological and artistic field. Most of us spend considerable time producing and developing content and establishing techniques for media manipulation. If you anything like me, then chances are that you’ll find yourself wondering about extending your favourite software as you grow through using it on a regular basis. Year after year you master some of the techniques, and yet you see great deal of limitations that are in front of you due to the closed development process of the software itself which in most cases you cannot interfere.
Let me modify!
If you have followed some of my recent posts on the subject of Pure Data VJ software, then you find that Pure Data has opened up numerous possibilities of developing your own software while utilising numerous Plug-ins, Libraries and Patches that worldwide community has released to date. These are very exciting times to be working in this field as knowledge and programs are at very healthy state. One of such AMAZING tools that I have only recently came about is : Qeve. It really encompasses large majority of your “wish lists” while maintaining its flexibility and cost. Free.
Without further a due, please explore this unique and promising piece of Pure Data software for Vjing: Queve!
“In art production the tool you use determine result of your work in many ways. Only by using free software you will not reproduce closed mind”
- Luca Carrubba aka Husk
Queve is a free tool for live performance and vjing developed by Estereotips collective with economic support by Catalan independent video maker association Telenoika and Center of visual arts productions Hangar from Barcelona. This software try to obtain the same usability of similar commercial applications (resolume, modul8, vdmx) while adding some unique features. Continue Reading
Openness of software to the public in my opinion has always played a crucial role in growth and development of multimedia and methods of production. The vast amount of choices out there make for a complex decision making process, and especially when you bound to pay for quality software.
This particular post is aimed to introduce some of such options that recently become available, but also highlight additional benefits of incorporating such tools that are capable of integrating with likes of MAX and Pure Data.
Unity Unity is a multi platform game development tool, designed from the start to ease creation. A fully integrated professional application, Unity just happens to contain the most powerful engine this side of a million dollars. Its recent 2.6 release marked itself as a Free Download option for all users. Unity Pro does have few additional extras, yet there are options to try then out for at least 30 days, which could be a yummy option for some.
I have picked this news via vjforums discussions (Thanks bridd) that also touched
a subject of “Max-Unity Interoperability Toolkit version 1.0″ (Thanks Elbows). I suggest you also check it out.
Max-Unity Interoperability Toolkit version 1.0. μ [myu] μ [myu] Max-Unity Interoperability Toolkit version 1.0. μ [myu] is designed to simplify communication between the Max/MSP/Jitter http://www.cycling74.com and Unity3D http://www.unity3d.com rapid prototyping environments. Utilizing the TCP network packets, μ [myu] allows for easy bi-directional control of Unity3D and Max/MSP/Jitter assets, as well as importing of dynamic Jitter textures into Unity3D scene. Apart from the Jitter-specific texture communication protocol, μ [myu] relies upon the netsend/netreceive framework, thus making it also compatible with Pure-Data http://www.pure-data.info.
WHY μ?
Max/MSP/Jitter and Pure-Data offer unprecedented flexibility in digital signal processing, particularly audio, as well as easy integration of external controllers and sensors, video, and 3D assets, while Unity3D is an advanced scalable and optimized 3D gaming engine with integrated intuitive scene editor and physics engine. By coupling their strengths μ [myu] aims to expand their rapid prototyping potential with minimal integration overhead.
Mother Reaches 0.6
It’s sure is a sign of an active project where it keeps leaping between each release so quickly, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. As project matures, additional resources and tutorials become available and personally I’ll try to keep readers updated on anything that I cross by.
Massive thanks go as always to Ilias Bergstorm (Lead Developer) and ongoing support involvement from Krzysztof Golinski on the project, developing of Mother has now sped up a bit, hence the increased release frequency!
New Features : Mother 0.6:
Small mistakes fixed from previous 0.5 release: Waltz synth example was not working, and I failed to mention in the documentation that you also need the Shapetween library to develop new synths. Note: Shapetween is a library for Processing that provides an easy way of animating elements within a sketch in a variety of ways.
More comprehensive secondary screen support introduced.
pre(), draw(), post() and dispose() methods are now called properly in synth libraries.
It is no longer necessary to put an Init() method in sketches intended as Synths for Mother (Finally!).
Download:
As always, you can download the latest version from the Google code repository!
Mother has reached a new milestone today (0.5) by expanding to OSX and adding processing update to version 1.0.7. Through discussion with Illias previously I have made a suggestion of trying to keep processing libraries in separate folders from Mother.jar that’s so if processing.org makes an update, Mother update could be simply implemented through overwriting some folders. Im very happy that this feature is now implemented and functioning. Thanks Illias!
To Download Mother version 0.5.0, visit from Google code repository and grab your preferred version (PC/OSX).

At present moment there is a growing number of exciting Pure Data relating projects that relate to VJing. It becomes a prosperous to see Open Source field being filled with talent putting great amount of energy and skill to put together tools and methods for visual creation of Open Source Tools and Software.
As this field matures, it would be natural to see further integration through Pure Data to other applications (ie. Blender3D, Processing, Mother, Python) that cover additional methods and styles in digital creation.
One of such applications floating in the Open Source space. – Meta VJ has been recently released to version 1.0 and it definitely worth a look and future attention. While it has no documentation at hand at present, it still can be great learning curve and example for those that use same technologies.
The MetaVJ is a new system of modular video objects available now for download. There are virtually no help files as yet, but these will be added as soon as the work on Metastudio 3 is done (for now). This does not work at all on Windows, and if you want to use the freeframe plugins you will need to install them (get the 1.0.5 version) and also the pdp_freeframe external from pdvjtools yourself.
